Fourth Grade Lesson Plans for Writing Workshop

This is where I will be posting the lesson plans that I am using with my first graders at Guthrie Elementary School.  Because this group of students will be taking the TAKS test in the spring, I have them 5 days/week.  Their homeroom teacher is preparing them for the proofreading part of this test and I am only focusing on the composition portion of the test.  She does share what grammar rules they are working on with me so that I can make sure students are applying those grammar rules in their writing.

We’ve been busy these first two weeks setting up our Writer’s Notebooks and gathering Seed Ideas for our Writing.

I use the Lucy Calkins unit of Study, 6 traits and the book by Denise Leograndis “Launching the Writing Workshop”.  So when you see page numbers, I am referencing those sources.

Week 6 – This is the week we have been publishing our writing digitally.  We’ve been busy making recordings and typing up our stories

Week 8 – found a typo!  The book I used on Monday was “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs”

Because I am the writing teacher for K-5, I have the “honor” of coaching the UIL Ready Writing competition.  I have “honor”  in quotes because I personally think it is too early in the year to begin prompt writing instruction.  However our competition is the first week of December, and I guess I have put it off long enough.  So the next four weeks of lesson plans will all be prompt writing.

Week 13 – Same as week 12.  We are continuing to prepare for our UIL Contest which is the week after Thanksgiving.

Week 17 – We will be working on our new laptops this week.  We will be typing our finished writing and working on our word processing skills

Weeks 21 – 25 – for the next four weeks I will be using lesson plans from Chapter 5 of Crunchtime by Bernabei, Hover, and Candler to prepare my fourth graders for their State Writing Test.  It’s a great book and I highly recommend it.

Week 26 & 27 – We are working on our own versions of THE IMPORTANT BOOK  by Margaret Wise Brown.  Students have chosen several things and have written what is important about them in the same pattern as the book.  We have also studied the illustrations and how the illustrator placed the words and pictures on the page.  Students are writing and illustrating their own books.

Weeks 28 – 31 – These will be science weeks for us.  We are learning about life cycles.  We have been observing  the life cycle of plants and  butterflies.  As for the writing component, I have introduced a science journal and we have learning how to draw and label diagrams.  We have also been learning how to write about what we have observed.  The kids have loved this and it’s been a good break from the traditional Writing Workshop

Week 32 – This is the big week of state testing in Texas.  I will be involved in helping to administer tests all week.

Week 33-36 – Writing Book Reviews.  For the next four weeks we will be learning how to write book reviews.  I am basing all my lessons from the book Writing about Reading by Janet Angelillo specifically focusing on Chapter 5 – Genres of Writing about Reading.  We will begin our unit of study by examining book reviews of some of our favorite books on  We will also be learning how to submit those reviews on the book review page on our school’s website.  Please vistit that page in the coming weeks to see our progress.
