Mrs. Wilson\’s Inspired Classroom

Second Grade Lesson Plans for Writing Workshop

This is where I will be posting the lesson plans that I am using with my 2nd  graders at Guthrie Elementary School.  You’ll notice that I only teach WW 4 days/week.  On Friday’s I conduct a science lab with these guys.  You won’t see Modeled Writing or Shared Writing as part of my lesson plans.  Their classroom teachers do these activities with them in their homerooms.

Because of the schedule, I do have these students for 1 hour.  So I include a Read Aloud because we usually have the extra time to enjoy one.

I use the Lucy Calkins unit of Study, 6 traits and the book by Denise Leograndis “Launching the Writing Workshop”.  So when you see page numbers, I am referencing those sources.

6 Traits of Good Writing Menu

Week 1

Week 2

Week 3

Week 4

Week 5

Week 6 – This is the week we have been publishing our writing digitally.  We’ve been busy making recordings and typing up our stories

Week 7

Week 8 – found a typo!  The book I used on Monday was “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs”

Week 9

Week 10 –  The broken link is now fixed!

Week 11 – This week we are beginning to prepare for our UIL Creative Writing Contest which is the first week of December.  For this contest, students are given a page that contains 5 pictures.  They can either choose one picture and create a story based on that picture or they can create a story that incorporates several of the pictures.  They will have 3o minutes to write their story.  I’ve never prepared students for a writing contest like this, so it will be an adventure!

Week 12

Week 13 – We will be doing a Thanksgiving book this week and writing about things we are thankful for

Week 14

Week 15

Week 16

Week 17 – We will be working on our new laptops this week.  We will be typing our finished writing and working on our word processing skills

Week 18

Week 19

Week 20

Week 21

Week 22 – We will be publishing stories that we worked on last week

Week 23 – 26 – We are beginning to work on our Animals of Guthrie, Tx Alphabet book.  All the work will be done in Power Point.  We will begin with a study of Alphaet books – looking at layouts, how the information is presented and what information is presented.  After brainstorming animals that could be included in the book, student groups will be assigned animals to research.  Students will then put their information on power point slides.   These sudents have not used the internet to do research nor have they used power point, so this unit is going to take a while to complete.

Week 26 & 27 – We are working on our own versions of THE IMPORTANT BOOK  by Margaret Wise Brown.  Students have chosen several things and have written what is important about them in the same pattern as the book.  We have also studied the illustrations and how the illustrator placed the words and pictures on the page.  Students are writing and illustrating their own books.

Weeks 28 – 31 – These will be science weeks for us.  We are learning about life cycles.  We have been observing  the life cycle of plants and  butterflies.  As for the writing component, I have introduced a science journal and we have learning how to draw and label diagrams.  We have also been learning how to write about what we have observed.  The kids have loved this and it’s been a good break from the traditional Writing Workshop

Week 32 – This is the big week of state testing in Texas.  I will be involved in helping to administer tests all week.

Week 33-36 – Writing Book Reviews.  For the next four weeks we will be learning how to write book reviews.  I am basing all my lessons from the book Writing about Reading by Janet Angelillo specifically focusing on Chapter 5 – Genres of Writing about Reading.  We will begin our unit of study by examining book reviews of some of our favorite books on Amazon.com.  We will also be learning how to submit those reviews on the book review page on our school’s website.  Please vistit that page in the coming weeks to see our progress.  http://www.guthriejags.net/books/

Thank you. My intention in putting these lesson plans on my blog is to help teachers. I’ll be posting the lesson plans weekly as I get them written.

My grade two studetns enjoyed reading and then hearing your grade two students’ stories. It was very motivating for them and they are beginning to see themselves as writers. It has been a difficult journey, but they are now beginning to be more comfortable and take the risks needed.

How exciting! I’m so thankful that my second grader’s writing is inspiring your students. I can’t wait to share your comment with them. They will be so excited to know that other students are reading and listening to their stories!
Hang in there! The journey may be difficult, but it’s worth it!

    Mrs. Wilson,

What a great resource to find. Thanks. I’m in the process of trying to integrate a writing workshop into our “have to teach program.” This will be a big help.
